Lottery of False Memories Print

A person who uses selfies with homeless people To gain followers, seeking validation From likes and comments on their screen But what do they truly gain? Their hearts may not be pure or kind They use the less fortunate as props To boost their own image, to make them shine But at what cost to those without a home? They seek attention with no regard For those who live on the streets Their struggles and hardships ignored As they pose and smile for the perfect shot The homeless are not just a backdrop To be used for personal gain They are human beings with hopes and dreams Deserving of respect and dignity So let us not forget those in need As we scroll through our feeds And think twice before we like or share A selfie with a homeless person without care. This was inspired by a colleague who frequently would post pictures on social media of her helping homeless people to help create the perception as she looked to embark on her political career. It seemed a particularly cynical act, therefore, I wanted to capture the sense of emptiness that the false hope offered and, at the same time, intimate the homeless man was close to death and yet was still being used.
