About The Artwork

"Marcus | Vessels of Story" presents Marcus, whose tattoos and scars narrate his life's journey and the search for his identity. As we embrace 2024, this artwork echoes a hope for broader acceptance, celebrating individuality and human dignity. The tattoos on Marcus's body are not merely aesthetic; they're the words of his personal story, with each scar marking a chapter of resilience. These indelible marks, some clear and others blurred, symbolize the ongoing impact of life's experiences. Viewers are invited to ponder the meanings that lie beneath the ink and to connect with Marcus's silent yet expressive gaze, laden with untold tales. The digital watercolor medium on cotton rag vividly captures the textures of his story-laden skin against the contemplative green backdrop. The medium of digital watercolor on cotton rag was chosen for its ability to convey the rich textures and the visceral intensity of Marcus's presence. It allows for a raw, almost tactile expression of skin and ink, giving life to the stillness of the image. The dark and moody style, accentuated by the green backdrop, adds to the depth and introspection, drawing the viewer into a contemplative state. This piece challenges observers to see past the surface and to empathize with the collective narrative of struggle, perseverance, and meaning. It's an invitation to share in the human condition, to understand those like Marcus who wear their stories for all to see.

As a multidisciplinary artist, I derive inspiration from my empathy for humanity and an insatiable desire to explore the world's beauty and cultural complexity. I was born in 1963 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Penn State, where I took classes ranging from abnormal psychology to existentialism in order to broaden my creative mind. My extensive travels have enriched my perspective and significantly influenced my work. With my husband, Jeff, I have designed and built Tanglewild Gardens, a renowned botanical garden that doubles as our home and sanctuary in Austin, Texas. My career has spanned various fields including fine art, design, publishing, fashion, and technology, where I have had the privilege of leading global creative teams. My artwork, which has received international recognition, has been featured in prestigious publications and exhibitions and is collected by individuals worldwide. My art is a deeply personal and evocative blend of traditional and digital methods, incorporating AI as a collaborative tool. It delves into themes such as cultural diversity, injustice, and surrealism. As a gay man who has faced discrimination and lost many friends to AIDS, my work is imbued with profound empathy and a universally powerful impact. This combination of human emotion and innovative technique makes my art uniquely resonant. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my work with a global audience and to be part of such a diverse and impressive group of artists. If you find my work inspiring, I would be honored if you chose to follow me and stay updated on my latest projects. Thank you so much for taking the time to explore my creations.
