This artwork was inspired by an encounter I had with a young man who had stepped in front of a train in Mountain View, California, after losing his life savings in a crypto scam. he sadly took his own life. I wanted to highlight the types of predatory business practices and document the casualties commonplace in Silicon Valley that go undocumented in the media. It also inspired a poem and is featured alongside Lil Diamond Smith Story PUMP and DUMP Crypto pump and dumps, a game of greed, Where scheming traders seek to deceive, They buy in low and then make a steed, To ride the wave of hype and then leave. They hype up coins with false claims, And gullible investors take the bait, They buy in high and then the price maims, Leaving them holding bags of crypto freight. The pumpers laugh and count their gains, As the duped investors feel the pains, But this game of trickery never sustains, As eventually the truth reveals its stains. So beware of the pump and dump scheme, It's a dangerous game that's best not to play, For in the end, only the pumpers gleam, While the rest are left with losses to pay.

While Mark M. Whelan's art is primarily portraits and figurative pictures. However, his aim is not to represent a beautiful image of a person or an individual in a futuristic context; rather, it’s an ongoing exploration of the process of how art is created concerning its structure, composition, colour, and technique. Like many figurative painters of his generation, it’s impossible for Whelan to avoid the looming shadows of Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and Lucian Freud, all of which have dominated the figurative world, their paintings both evocative, emotional and full of existential angst and anticipation of an uncertain future. However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
