in light of the extensive and divisive political rhetoric pertaining to identity in the united states, it appeared that the unintended consequence was the gradual disappearance of a sense of personality. Under all the banners and slogans, the sense of personhood was being stripped away, leaving nothing but desolation. dvertising, with its flashy lights Sterilizes personality, and blurs our sight It tells us who to be, and what to do And leaves no room, for individuality or for you It tells us what to wear, and what to buy And how to act, and how to look on the sly It creates a homogeny, of thought and of deed And leaves no room, for originality or for me It feeds on our insecurities and our fears And exploits them, to bring us to tears It tells us that we're not good enough, as we are And that we need their products, to reach their star But we must not be fooled, by their clever guise We must reject their control, and open our eyes To the harm that they do, and the damage they cause And embrace our individuality, with pride and without pause.

While Mark M. Whelan's art is primarily portraits and figurative pictures. However, his aim is not to represent a beautiful image of a person or an individual in a futuristic context; rather, it’s an ongoing exploration of the process of how art is created concerning its structure, composition, colour, and technique. Like many figurative painters of his generation, it’s impossible for Whelan to avoid the looming shadows of Francisco Goya, Francis Bacon, Hieronymus Bosch and Lucian Freud, all of which have dominated the figurative world, their paintings both evocative, emotional and full of existential angst and anticipation of an uncertain future. However, Whelan is finding his futuristic path into the light, away from these titans of the art world, his work constantly seeking to go beyond the discipline of representational art and the more gestural expressionism that we are familiar with in the figurative paintings of Bacon.
