About The Artwork

Two pastel drawings were completed during artist residency at Arte Ginestrelle in Assisi, Italy, in summer 2015. The second pastel drawing, “A Flower Offering to San Francesco in Assisi,” is my homage to Giotto. The centerpiece in the composition is a pink peony, which was offered to me as a gift from a local farmer during my walk in Mt. Subasio. This encounter happened at the right moment during my search for the second composition. The background is based on the color study of Giotto’s blues at Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi. “A Flower Offering to Santa Chiara in Assisi” and “A Flower Offering to San Francesco in Assisi” have been used for texture on my 3D bust. These two drawings can be found in the "Works from 2000 - present", below the 3D model on my website. My hair has been removed from my bust. As I see many symbolic meanings in the hair and how hair has been manipulated in human society: temptation, seduction, vanity, sexuality, ego, pride, and self-knowledge. One of steps of "seeing" is removing "conditions". I am a painter and mainly abstract. Drawing from life challenges me to the state where my mind and body do nothing but seeing, breathing, and drawing. Drawing is an act as equally demanding as seeing. Drawing, it is still one of the most difficult challenges I have today.

I was born and raised in South Korea until my family immigrated to the US in 1988. After about one year at a local high school, I attended Otis Institute of Parsons School of Art and Design. After completion of a B.F.A. degree at Otis, I received a master's degree at California State University at Long Beach. While growing up in Korea, I was taught to follow law and order and to pursue a perfection of skill under Confucianism. Taoism allowed me to enjoy the feeling of process and imagination. Buddhism taught me a way to meditate and contemplate, while Zen showed me how to be spontaneous in every moment of life. Shamanism increased my awareness of a life force behind the visual reality. My works synthesize the influences from my childhood, the higher education I received in the US, and the various cultures from my travels. Over the past 20 years, regardless changes in style, medium, and technique, my work has been the reflection of how I perceive our universe as the following. Everything exists in relationship to others. The relationships sustain the universe and form ultimate unity. The unity comes with the understanding of relationships. Painting is a creative event of relationships that seeks unity.
