About The Artwork

Living in an older, large urban environment I find architectural details as interesting as the vistas of streets and alleys. I frequently use a close-up view as subject matter. I find gates, cornerstones, pediments, relief sculptures, etc. from different decades. The weathering effects, cracked or crumbled, rusted or muted colors of the surfaces or objects guide my composition. I find the freedom in the deteriorating surfaces to create my own color scheme to enhance the abstract quality these close-up views offer. I use a layered approach to my drawing. I start with one color and cover the whole surface. I use a subtractive method of pulling (erasing) out the areas of highlights. Then slowly build up layers of color marks to enhance the middle ground and deepen the shadows. I do some blending, but I prefer the mark making to build up the sense of texture and deterioration.

It was clear to me from very young that interacting creatively with the Fine Arts would bring me joy and a better understanding of my world. Eventually. I chose to focus on two-dimensional Visual Art as a way to express my observations, new perspectives and memories. I am interested in two-dimensional media; drawing, painting, and photography. It is important to me that my imagery is recognizable in the conventional sense because I want my work to have the language of familiarity. I use images that not only represent meaningful events, animals or people in my life, but also represent our common humanity.
