Chris McCandless Print

Chris McCandless was a man who became frustrated with society, consumerism and frivolity. He gave away his possessions, burnt his money and headed into the wild, to Alaska, where he lived in solitude; hunting, gathering and writing a moving journal, some of which can be read in the book Back to the Wild. The book was lent to me by my father several years ago and was one of those special books that change the course of things and McCandless lingered in my mind until, in 2014, I decided to draw him. I chose a photograph of the actor Emile Hirsch, who plays McCandless in the film Into the Wild, overcome with awe as he walks through Alaska, as the few surviving photographs of Alexander Supertramp (Chris McCandless) are of poor quality to be used as references. I wanted to make him as real as possible; to represent the relief of his face, for he is one of the most real humans I have ever read of.
