John Glynn was born in 1964 in Plymouth, Devon, in the beautiful South West of England, but now living in Scotland.Always having an eye for the weird and wonderful, Johns interest in art began at an early age and developed over the years into a true passion, with a penchant for the abstract and surreal.Whilst experimenting with various types of media, Johns discovery of ink on paper allowed him to produce highly detailed and intricate work and afforded him a clarity of expression that was to become his hallmark. For an aspiring artist developing his craft, having to support himself and a young family was never going to be easy. Over the years, John has had to supplement his income from sales of his art by undertaking a range of different and often challenging jobs: from dustman to surveyor and from scaffold rigger to HGV lorry driver. Most recently he has spent time as a support worker, helping young adults with learning difficulties.Almost subconsciously, John found himself expressing many of his lifes experiences through his work in some shape or form, each piece being in some way cathartic. Recurring characters and themes within his work are often representative of personal experiences, although they may appear in different guises. Some of Johns images can take months to finish, with individual sections taking time to develop. Often, a high level of detail is required to fully flesh out his ideas. Others are produced in a shorter time but with a great deal of intensity until the work is completed. Since moving to Scotland John has developed a unique way to represent the wonderful harbours he lives in and visits daily. Although for many years he completely refused to do such work as he felt there were enough artist who were already producing images of such places and was himself more interested in creating places of his imagination. However after an early morning walk around Banff harbour he suddenly saw in his mind an image of the quirky houses and promptly returned home to create his first 'harbour' painting. They started to sell right away and have continued to grow in popularity and are being sold in a growing number of galleries in Scotland and the SW of England. Says John ' I get a great deal of satisfaction producing my harbour work and I am very grateful for the response others have had to it. I have tried to capture the essence of these places... The charm, peace, and tranquility that I think is so unique to this part of the world'.
