About The Artwork

The work of Pieter Bruegel (1525-1569) again has certainly influenced my choice of subject matter. His personal witness of the religious persecution going on around him was something he risked his life to comment on. He was walking a razors edge when creating some of these enigmatic paintings and drawings. He witnessed the beastly tactics of the church in using the strong arm of the state to enforce it's dogmas on all...murdering thousands. Enacting legislative decrees by the state gave legal justification to meet out monstrous penalties on all who failed to comply with this manner of establishing the dogmas of the church. The act of worshiping God according to the dictates of one's conscience resulted in torture, burning at the stake, brutalizing on the breaking wheel and many, many other demonic methods to inflict suffering and death upon man, woman or child and thus terrorizing the population. This small pen and ink sketch is a reminder of what happens when religion and the state clasps hands together in a power merge to achieve universal control over the individual through edict; where freedom of conscience is criminal...punishable by death. This work is signed and dated on the back. November 2016
