About The Artwork

Theodore Roosevelt is sitting for Victor David Brenner in his library at Sagamore Hill, Oyster Bay, New York. Brenner is sketching TR for the Panama Canal Service Medal. This is the moment which ‘sparked’ the birth of the Lincoln Cent – during the sitting Brenner showed Roosevelt a Lincoln plaque he had created (shown to the right of Brenner’s elbow). Brenner’s affection for Lincoln was shared with TR., Theodore Roosevelt Sr. (pictured above TR on his Wall of Honor) served in Lincoln’s administration and imbued his son with a love of the 16th president. On this afternoon, these two men “conspired” to break a long standing precedent initiated by George Washington, to only portray allegorical figures on our coinage: warning that depicting an individual would make him a sovereign, which was not in keeping with the new representative democracy. This my attempt to bring this historic moment to life.
