I drew this at a time when it grew commonplace to see men showing up in convenience stores and other public places heavily armed. It was a statement. A form of rebellion among men who were powerless to increase their wages or control the arc of their own destiny. Their weapon was an extension of themselves. As Americans or as men. There was something both disturbing and poignant about it. I used this drawing to illustrate a personal essay that was published by The Paris Review, in which I recalled my childhood playing with guns, a stage I outgrew. My guns were toys. I was eight and nine years old. I still enjoy gunplay in movies and I read books by authors like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett and William Faulkner where the weapon is an icebreaker and a form of currency. I've also used guns as an op-ed metaphor for various publications. The weapon that's an American emblem has become a sticking point, and we are well stuck. Neighboring countries look at us as if something is wrong, and it is. It might turn out that a next generation is able to turn the page. I hope so. Here's that essay: https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2016/06/20/gunplay/
