ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have always loved Alice in Wonderland, since I was a very small child (1970s). She has just always been a character I could identify with, as my world during childhood was very upside down and confusing. When my college drawing instructor gave us an assignment in zentangle art, I decided to do mine centered around Alice. I feel like this illustrative drawing brings a touch of surrealism with the strange pond and fish, and Beetlejuice with all those black stripes into the Alice scene. I feel like that gives it a fun aspect. The isolation of color to be only on Alice, herself, shows that she is the only thing that is real, in the image. As I was in a college drawing class at the time, the medium of paper and some kind of drawing instrument was required. I loved working with colored pencil in that class, and I wanted some color to be somewhere in this image, but I also knew that if I added color to the whole piece, it would mute some of the striking aspects of the black and white, so I decided to be selective about where the color placement would go.

Christyl Lorraina has been drawing whimsical art for most of her life, and painting since about 2013. She began doing more mixed media, with digital painting over hand-drawn work, around 2015. Her work has been lauded as "magical," "whimsical," and "illustrative." It is perfectly suited for dreamers, young adults, fantasy enthusiasts, and children. In college art courses, she fell in love with the sfumato technique, which is most evident in her Fox Fantasy oil painting. She also enjoys creating sculpture and doing fiber arts such as needle felting and crochet. Additionally, she enjoys making music and singing, gardening, and crafting, in general.
