ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The language differentiation for the numeral “5”is not to divide, but to unite. The use of different languages to interpret Chanel No.5 will be revolutionary and unique. With this in mind, I’ve created Chanel No. 五 for Asia, namely ,China. The number 5 (五, Pinyin: wŭ) is associated with the five elements (Water, Fire, Earth, Wood, and Metal) in Chinese philosophy, and in turn was historically associated with the Emperor of China. The natural familiarity of one’s native language being associated with a much adored style icon creates intimate, meaningful and precious individual experiences. LANGUAGES DO NOT DIVIDE, FEAR DOES.

"I believe I was created to create. If you stop dreaming - you die." . I was an Art student in High School but pursuing Art as a career was frown upon by society and family. I was told to stop dreaming! I worked in a corporate world. I was sad. Strangley , after 20 years, life came full circle, I was working in LASALLE College of the Arts. I am now creating Art everyday. I am happy. The medium I use are acrylic mix with oil, crystal resin, sand gel, paper, gold flakes, chinese ink and even nail polish. I love to experiment and push boundaries. I am very much influenced by Austrian artist Voka, who coined the term Spontaneous Realism to describe the dynamic creative process of his representational and impressionistic imagery. The explosive colours and energetic brushwork in his paintings describe familiar images in a personal manner. My works are generally conceptual, impressionistic, provocative – some even controversial. I am experimental, and like pushing boundaries. I like to capture the energy and exuberance of my surroundings with rich and vibrant colours, and document dynamic compositions with bold brush strokes. The sheer anticipation of translating my emotions and ideas onto a white canvas are both exciting and agonising! I absolutely enjoy being lost in this uncertain journey of timeless space filled with possibilities. I do not deliberately try to advocate controversial issues with shocking images through my works. Art should not be sensationalized. Rather, art should comfort the disturbed, and disturb those in comfort. I believe art can communicate what words cannot. I want visitors to say, “I am glad I came”, after visiting The Tiffin Gallery. Enjoy and have a great day ahead!!! Love, Danny Raven TAN
