About The Artwork

With Elvis again in the spotlight and rightfully having his cultural importance reassessed and celebrated, I have revisited my creative interests in this musical and cultural icon. With this painting, I wanted to show an internal conflict of a man whose troubled past would eventually subsume him via his addictions and but at the same time, communicate the colourful, vital raw energy of the early Rock and Roll era Elvis. The piece celebrates Elvis using a contemporary pop art visual aesthetic. The effect of the colour and composition radiates energy and movement. The title is taken from the number assigned to Elvis and worn on his prison uniform in the motion picture Jailhouse Rock and also has a double meaning in this context as a metaphor for Elvis eventually being a prisoner of his success.

My work is informed by emotional responses to colour and the figurative and abstract forms found in natural and urban settings. I have produced creative works for high profile museums and galleries including the V&A and the RA, London. Recent MA study in Art and Design has taken my practice in a typographic/pop-cultural direction. I will continue to develop the work through visual experimentation to produce art that communicates the artistic intention to the viewer in a visually compelling manner.
