Gunning for Marx - Limited Edition of 25 Print

Part of my "Curry Kitsch" collection that explores the kitschy world of Bollywood movie themes from the 1970s and 1980s, this piece showcases the heady mix of Marxist ideas of social inequality and the influences from crime capers of French/Italian cinema that shaped the narrative arc of the male protagonist - "the hero" - of Bollywood cinema from that era. Often playing the anti-hero who's on the wrong side of law and justifying his actions with anti-capitalist arguments, the male protagonist of this genre had no time for romance and the finer aspects of life and would find himself making money just for the sake of making money. Replacing the head of the Bollywood Superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, from the movie poster of one of his biggest hits from the 70s, "Don", with the head of Karl Marx, I've incorporated digital manipulations to the work that captures the comic book like feel of the action posters of that genre of cinema and induce a highly saturated color effect to the work to reflect the color palette of such posters. The girl with the gun is the cult actress Zeenat Aman, who was known for playing the "bad girl" ( and plays one in "Don"). The work if offered as a large canvas print.
