Just a Phase (This Image No Longer Exists in This State) Print

The Jupiter Overtakes Saturn triptych consists of three pieces: Approach, Conjunction, and Transcendence. It is a meditation on the cycles of life and my own artistic 20-year cycle, which began in 2003 and ended this year. Approach focuses on feeling stifled or the need to hide parts of oneself away, fear, and confusion. In this layer, now hidden under the completed artwork, I wrote every negative thing that had ever been said or suggested to me by my family members. I locked it into the layer as a form of binding release, to leave it on the board and be free of it. The vibrant pink (Opera Red by Turner Colour Works LTD) is washed over in layers as a kind of steam; like the vibrance of spirit radiating from the figure; the truest version of self. In the final piece, that true self is hidden and stifled under layers of acrylic modeling paste and matte black gouache, as if covered by magma or sludge.
