About The Artwork

I first saw Moscow in 1970, when the Soviet Union was very much "the Enemy", and the iconic symbol of Russia was this church next to the Kremlin. For me, it held a mixture a awe, fear, and wonderment. At first glance a disorganized mess, continued observation allows one to grasp the symmetry and interplay of shapes - much like Russia itself. Built to celebrate the victory over Golden Horde Mongols in Kazan, the eight chapels are arranged around the central chapel to appear like rising flames - a glorious Advent wreath! In the early Renaissance it was seen as the earthly symbol of the Heavenly City, and served as an allegory of the Jerusalem Temple in the annual Palm Sunday parade. This view includes the monument to Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin, who led a defense of the city in 1612. I hope my treatment of the church will remind the viewer that strength, resistance, and devotion can also be beautiful!

“I create convergent media art that celebrates the values of rural life and of the land itself, that fosters a sense of self-empowerment, self-love, self-representation, community, and the strengths of traditional cultures. My work explores the relationship between both high and low technology cultures, ethnic and class identities, shamanic tourism, and an expanding sense of the natural and supernatural worlds. As a verbal and visual storyteller, I strive to commit my rich and varied life experiences to canvas and paper, sharing the ceremonial life of indigenous communities in both normal and visionary time, and exploring concepts of strength and vulnerability through treatments of my royal, noble, and humble ancestors. What starts out as contemplation becomes, I hope, a portal for the viewer to briefly enter another reality, leaving only a sense of a picture album of the road not taken and a eulogy for the self-imposed limits of our existence.” Books "ESCAPE From the Darkroom! - Old-School Principles Applied to Modern Digital Photography" [2013] https://amazon.com/dp/1484840011/ “GeoHypnotics: A Gentle Way to Access Deeper Consciousness” [2016] Four volumes https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530632501/ ; https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530640121/; https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530644690/ ; https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530786126/ https://amazon.com/author/brianwilkes
