About The Artwork

"Allegory in Red" is a large oil and gold leaf painting on canvas with two necklaces the model gave me. She is a close friend, a fellow student and artist. I wanted to show her strength, determination, and bravery at the time of this painting, which she still sustains. My inspiration from past artists are the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones. Their artwork in England changed people’s awareness of women, and showed a sense of feminine power and beauty. I am also influenced by religious beliefs and in stained glass art. Burne-Jones was a master of this art form. I have traveled a lot to view and study his works, to even copying his original art. The medium and style are indicative of the Pre-Raphaelites. In fact, the precision of the ground and application and how they painted was my intention in this particular work. The ground has to be white, then a technical method of applying the paint, so it has a purity, like stained glass. In fact, I spoke with the main historians at The Tate Museum in England who wrote a book on this procedure. The wings with the butterflies on them, the red dress, carnation flower, and paint brush in the darkened areas are all symbolic metaphors that are stories within stories. It is my hope that the viewer will find their own allegorical story in looking at this work. That will in turn give them a sense of beauty and strength to pursue their own dreams. Painted in Tree Studios, Chicago in 1995.

My works are reflections of my experience in dream-like, psychological fairy tales that capture in frozen time various stages of my life. Through symbolic metaphor, I struggle, confront, and search the mysterious journey of existence. My goal is to create art that, in uncertain times, portrays the beauty that comes from the inner strength, hope, and enduring spirit that is human.
