Intuitive Ideograms I work fast, I work intuitively. When it comes to painting, I shoot first and ask questions later. I spend hours looking at the results of my action painting like adventure. Oil paint needs time to dry, I need time to prepare my next move. I look at my initial digital idea, I add, I scrape off, the good old Push and Pull. Eventually it feels complete, or not. Eventually there is nothing more to add. I find it hard to keep things simple. But one can only juggle so many balls. My bag of tricks is a bric-a-brac of painting techniques and visual devices: paint poured or applied with brush or knife flattened and crushed into the canvas, oil paint or acrylic, sometimes both at the same time, paint applied with rags, scraped or rubbed into the surface as if to move back and forth on the two sides of the picture plane, sharp edges, collage, and cut-outs. My work is twofold: Firstly, it consists in the production of Ideograms, digital paintings I work on my tablet or my sketch book, always at hand. I take pictures, I edit, I draw, I overlap images, I search for new significations and associations. Secondly, in my painting studio, I paint from this digital material, the painting process takes over, sometimes I stay close to my initial visual idea, sometimes I explore further, freely, until it feels right. I let intuition guide me to where the painting wants to go. It is a journey of discovery after all. The motivation behind my daily practice of painting. There is a back and forth between digital image and physical painting. From sleek computer screen to rough surfaced, drippy, gooey painting. Details from my paintings and drawings I scan and photograph and so they reintegrate my digital work process. I find that my subject matter and my interests are the result of my own life experience: that of a cultural migrant where old world symbolism and mythology met pop art and science-fiction. I work with my capacity to remember, working with my selective memory; my long term / short term memory. This and the fantastic source of imagery that is internet provide the source material that I draw my inspiration from.
