About The Artwork

The work was inspired by a great Friend by the name of Arthur Davies, originally from Southend on Sea Essex, who had taken advantage of the assisted passage programme offered by the Australian government to immigrants from Britain. Arthur arrived in Australia by ship, the Canberra but soon after settling was called up to Australian Armed Forces and served as a Combat Engineer with the Australian Army in Vietnam. He once told me that upon his return to Australia, for seven years all he did was drive all over Australia, sleeping in his vehicle. In the morning his breakfast consisted of a bottle of red wine - every day. When we met in construction in Sydney, I also learned he had worked installing the tiles on the Sydney Opera House roof. The man was a tradesman par excellence ! He had also worked as a lecturer at Randwick technical college in Sydney. On the occasion pictured we were on a construction job in the business district of Sydney when there was an ear splitting metallic crash from the direction of where the steelfixers were working. I saw a 'thing' like a shadow leave his body at which point his eyes changed colour to amber. This thing then re entered Arthur his eyes turned dark brown again and, after picking his trowel up which he'd dropped he held it at my throat for a second or two, but then came too and just carried on as normal. He had already told me he'd been blown up three times.

I am originally British, born in Stornoway Isle of Lewis. Historically I have travelled the world, on one occasion overseas for twelve years non stop. My Mothers side of our family were Scottish, my Father was born in what used to be British North Borneo, now the state of Sabah Malaysia. Dad had served on aircraft carriers as a Fleet Air Arm pilot having signed on in Singapore just before the Japanese invasion. Our great uncle, Hector McNicol founded what became the McNicol School in Kilmarnock which focused on Scottish Landscapes. All of us siblings seem to have inherited artistic abilities of one kind or another.
