This piece is part of a collection that explore the gap between how you appear and who you are. Leaving behind my comfortable process and materials and stripping away my familiar palette and brushwork, I have examined what is left when a façade is lifted. The process has been a washing away of conventions and seeing the fragments and traces of what remains - a stark and complex look at the imperfection of self.

Maryann Didriksen (b.1965, Queens, N.Y) is an American painter whose paintings probe the concept of beauty, visibility, strength and age. Before returning to painting full-time in 2001 Maryann worked as an Art Director and graphic designer. She holds a BFA from Alfred University and is a signature member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey. She lives and works in Rockaway Township, New Jersey.
