Boys like pink and flowers too (aka balls on fire) Print

This piece was created in 2022. Acrylic on 60 x 80 cm 280g/m2 100% cotton canvas, stretched over a light wooden frame. It will be shipped flat, securely inside a shipping box. I'm fascinated by female faces but one day an old photo of my husband on the studio wall caught my eye. The B&W photo was taken in summer in the garden of our little house in the countryside outside of Rome. He was young and had recently lost his father. There is the beauty and vibrancy of youth and summer but also a great sadness. I hope I've captured this. It also reflects my interest in male portraiture. There seem to be so few portraits of males these days and those that I see are mostly quite dark or with a hard geometric style. This painting offers a perspective perhaps on the softer side of men, heart, sensitivity and sweetness. Men don't cry but they do. There is so much pressure and confusion for young men, these days especially, on what it is to be male and what 'maleness' or 'masculinity' mean. As a women I doubt I will every fully comprehend the struggle men experience with identity and cultural expectations but I'm exploring this theme with curiosity.
