I started painting this after a visit to St Ives in January 2020. It is an abstract view of the harbour in St Ives from high on the hill. I've included elements that I saw, but it is not an accurate representation. Interestingly, people who have seen this all recognise it as the harbour at St Ives...

I drift along the edge of abstraction and I often find myself diving into the deep realms of abstract expressionism, intuitively exploring the landscape of the natural world, of body, and of mind. I use gestural marks, colour, and texture to describe, the connection I have with a place or an experience and its energy and the impact it has on me. I use acrylics and mixed media, building layers using a variety of tools such as rags, spatulas, bits of plastic, and card as well as brushes. Then I scrape back into the paint to reveal a rich, textured, and sophisticated story. There may be as many as 10 layers of work, some hidden or with only a speck being revealed. I increasingly find myself painting what I feel, not what I see. A painting will reveal itself to me and after leaving it to settle for a few days I can read stories in the painting, which relate to recent experiences. I work from my studio in The Silk Mill in Somerset, England.
