Tekst by :Margrethe Venema "Schoonschip"/Dutch-Belgium Literair Magazine( june 2012)Specially for the exhibition, with the theme ' between Now and After utopia dystopia ', which in the carriage house of the mid-June 2012 will start the Drentse Roden, Fokko Rijkens has painted CITYPARADISE. It is an imaginary, almost surreal, view of the shopping alley on the north side of the Grote Markt in Groningen, where we see the beginning of the Zwanestraat in the distance. The horizontal light stripes, back by the Guilder, divide the image into nearby streets and later whizzing. Symbolically we might say that the light stripes divide the space in a here and now, where we sit, on the one hand, people see see see come and go, and in a distance or future, which has yet not much to say. The stop light is on red – we still have to wait for the raging traffic, before we can make the crossing. For the moment it is speculating. We look at the Windows on the right side we see enticing holiday images. At the top is a vague reflection of a Ferris wheel to see. Apparently it's fair, but we hear no music. We look at the people, then we see them calm yourselves down together in groups, each in their own dream world. It feels safe on this side of the line, in the here and now and in one's own thoughts or musings. Go left on people in the images of their tablets and right looks a dreamy woman. In the enchanting city evening light everything seems carefree, everything. Of the future we have nothing to fear in the here and now. Or we keep ourselves?
