About The Artwork

Inspired by watercolour sketches executed at the Early Morning Opera performance entitled 'Holoscenes' at the London's Burning Festival in late 2016; an aquatic dancer performed an every day task (in this case playing a guitar) in a huge tank of water to symbolise the difficulties facing the human race due to potential climate change. The dancer has been captured as he lay on his guitar, floating on the water's rise and fall, the scene recalling to mind the story of Orpheus whose head continued to sing after death, bouyed up by his magical lyre. What will we leave behind? Will our actions continue to play out in this world after we are gone? What effect do we have on the people around us? Acrylic glazes give this painting vibrant colours which are offset by the subtle brushwork and attention to tone, the crop and the distortion of the figure by the water make this image feel contemporary, yet it remains in proportion.

Following on from her role as Roaming Sketch Artist for Wilderness Festival between 2014 and 2018, Hamley became the first official Artist in Residence for Jazz Live at the Crypt, an established jazz venue in South London and was recently selected as the Reserve Artist for the 2022 Sky Portrait Artist of the Year. Hamley's work has been selected for the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, the Lynn Painter-Stainer's Competition, the Dulwich Picture Gallery Open Exhibition and she is a Folio Society commissioned Illustrator. When working plein air Hamley uses medium that are easily transportable such as watercolour. The larger format paintings are executed in the studio with acrylics as they allow her to work quickly, add texture and create depth of colour with glazes and dry-brush techniques. Dali and Magritte made an impression on Hamley at an early age, also Rembrandt and Renoir, later Goya, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Turner, Duchamp, Magritte, Escher, Stanley Spencer, Hockney, Bacon and Frink, currently Bonnar, Seurat and Manet.
