After a painting by the neoclassical Frenchman Jérôme-Martin Langlois (1779-1838) presented at the 1822 Salon following a royal commission in 1817 intended for the Palace of Versailles. Inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, the scene represents on the right, Endymion asleep, his right arm folded under his head and lying on a panther's skin; he holds a javelin in his left hand, his dog is at his feet, and a flying cupid raises the drapery in which he was enveloped. On the left, Diane, the quiver on her shoulder, suspended in the air seems impressed by the young shepherd. This work disappeared from the inventory of the Musée de Picardie in 1918. The dimensions of the original are: Height: 3.2 m; Width: 2.11 m, which is three times larger than the present execution.
