About The Artwork

This art piece is quite different from the rest of art you might seen before. Let me tell you the story of this work: Last Summer, I found a gorgeous, dark wood cupboard door. I decided to prime it and use it as my canvas. I started by painting the colorful chain of mountains. I was inspired by the Mountain of Seven Colors, located in the Andes of Peru. Besides brushes; I used palette knifes to lay the paint. The thin flexible knife let me apply the paint on thick layers creating some texture that imitated the rough surfaces of the mountains. When I completed the colorful mountain landscape, I turned around my “canvas” and I saw another smooth, delicate surface inviting me to paint once more. So I did. I did exactly what Vincent Van Gogh used to do. Often, he used to paint on both sides of his canvases. I have seen several of his double faced works displayed in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. The other side of this work depicts the see. Inspired by the ocean I grew near by. It is the kind of rough sea endlessly crashing against the islands that it builds and later destroys to pieces of rocks. This seascape remains us of the implacable but enchanting ocean we all fell in love at sunset. The work is framed. The frame comes as part of the canvas. The work is ready to hang. Lastly, with this artwork, as soon as you are ready for a change, all what you have to do is turn around the painting and you will have a completely different subject.

By training a psychiatrist, Sonia is a self-taught artist born in Peru. Currently retired, she lives in Ontario Canada. Many years ago, an intrinsic need for painting arose in me. I was felt moved by an interior force to look for brushes and pour my soul on sheets of canvases, paper, etc. Right then, I began to dedicate the few hours of my free time to immerse myself into my new discovery. I started by challenging myself with watercolors. I also tried myself in oils. Still, most of my work today is done in acrylics. As for my subjects, in the course of this discovery; I found inspiration in portraiture, nude, and landscape. Not long ago, I discovered abstract painting. Since, I spend my days enjoying this magical world. A world of color and unlimited imagination. I discovered that abstract is the kind of art that jealously hides all its rules and laws. To me, abstract painting is challenging, but it’s a challenge that makes me happy with myself. But most importantly, through this challenge, I reconciliate with the universe and with my own existence. Looking at my art it is easy to appreciate my love for color. Color makes paintings expressive. Contrasting colors evoke the mixed, often opposite feelings that sometimes overwhelm us. Bright colors subtly flirt with the eye and elicit positive emotions in us.
