About The Artwork

I was studying Renaissance Painting techniques at the time, after completing hundreds of "scrimshaw" etchings in ancient ivory artworks. in 1983, reading such books as Eastlake, and at the time I had found a rare copy of Salvador Dali's book - "Fifty Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship" in which I was intrigued by his descriptions of using amber as a secret and coveted medium known by painters in the Renaissance. By following his clues given in his book and by going to the Yale Art Library in new Haven CT, after experimentation I rediscovered the secret as to how to dissolve amber without the use of heat, I used this medium in this and several other paintings. One day in the early seventies while listening to music on the radio, I painted a small version of this painting as I was listening to rock music on the radio. In the eighties I enlarged the smaller painting onto a large canvas, re-drew the painting using a slide projector, and re-painted this larger version of the painting using research I had completed on using and dissolving amber as well as applying classical techniques of the science and chemistry of paint and colors. The painting was completed in the classical style using amber medium. The painting sold in the nineties for $10,000. In 2010, I was stranded in Ukraine, the painting had been in storage, along with four other very large murals, There was not a way to retrieve the paintings from the storage location, a barn in kent Ct, USA, consequently only one large painting of the series, The Dreaming Self was rescued. This painting and the others in storage are now missing or gone or destroyed for good. Only prints remain an option. This painting captures a feeling of what was then the tail end or rather the untimely "eclipse" and sunset of the 1960's Rock Revolution Counterculture. It is in essence a self portrait. The example of what was then not even known yet to be in a way a sort of early "Channeled " painting.
