About The Artwork

This is a small painting in watercolor and ink on paper. It is part of my Entanglement Series exploring relationships between color and line. Its subtitle (dispatch from summerland) is in reference to the spiritualist idea of the afterlife, which they called summerland. They believed it was possible to communicate with the dead who had passed into summerland, but were of course never able to obtain proof of this assertion. I like the idea of a dispatch from the afterlife (though I unfortunately do not personally have faith in such phenomena) being something unintelligible but beautiful. I also made this painting in the middle of the summer and looking back at it now that fall is settling in gives me a feeling of longing for what has passed. I appreciate the bright colors and pastels. The tangled black lines are reminiscent of overgrown foliage and the calm center like a view through the trees into a beautiful vista. It makes me think of a fishing trip we took where the only spot we could actually get close enough to the water to cast our lines was completely surrounded by lush forrest to the point where it was impossible to get the lures out into the water past 20 feet or so without loosing them in the branches. A sort of image of a wing or tropical leaf has also worked its way into this abstraction, in the middle left.
