This is a small painting in watercolor and ink on paper. It is part of my Entanglement Series exploring compositions defined by tangled lines. I started this painting with a series of watercolor washes, over which I applied pigmented drawing and acrylic based inks straight from the dropper in a series of interconnecting lines. The ink is applied while the watercolor background is still wet in order to achieve a patterned bleeding effect most prominent in some of the thicker black lines in this painting. There are some pale white areas in this painting that I painted out with a brush as the ink was drying, especially within a triangular formation in the bottom middle segment of the painting. Most of the line making is gestural and spontaneous. Part of the beauty of this method of picture making is that the drying watercolor background puts a time limit on how long I can work on the painting. Once the background is dry, the magic is gone. I think this is a particularly nice specimen from this series because it retains sharp contrasts between the dark and light forms, has a crisp, bright pallet of colors, and conveys a vibrant spontaneity that can be difficult to capture.
