About The Artwork

I wanted to paint my daugther during the first Covid 19 confinment, with a mask and her cell phone, to symbolise the impossibility to communicate, to see each other, to love, to live, as a young person. The end of a dream, of hope, or a suspended time of uncertainties. I hope to do other pieces in this atmosphere

I am Genevieve Lechasseur, from Montreal, Quebec, born in a little city in the Saguenay, Chicoutimi. Pursuit the phantasmagorical image. Perhaps this is the vector of my work. From various artistic fields, such as dance, visual arts, theatre and video, I can say that I am an explorer. According to an eclectic course, I tend to form a poetic entity, a metaphorical direction of the artist’s role at this opening millennium. How to present our world like modern myth, to present the body like living art and object of reflection? Dance is basis of my approach, interdependently with visual corpus, such as painting, sculpture, video. Emerging from ballet, butō and of flamenco traditions , I work on the theatricality of the body (physical or plastic), on the life or “existence”, to take again the expression of the late and fabled dancer Kazuo Ono. My dance starts from internalisation of images in the body. My visual art, of the externalisation of the body in the image. It acts, arguably, a dance of the heart or spirit. The characters I create do not belong to reality, but would be rather materialisation of the depths of the being and its diaphanous light. According to me, transfiguration concept in work is very important. Indeed, art is a crowned ritual which should call the spectator towards a questioning and an uncommon experiment.
