About The Artwork

When I lived in New York, the Chinese sometimes referred to the Statue of Liberty as the "Jade Goddess". The original copper skin had formed a pale green patina after years of exposure to salt water, giving the impression of jade. As I was in the shadow of the statue in the harbor in 1986 for the centennial de-dedication, Our Lady of the Harbor was illuminated by a spectacular Grucci fireworks display. Inspired by the series by Peter Max, I worked here to capture the American ideal of an harmonious mutli-colored nation. When I first executed this, I simply titled it "Liberty". My own ancestors include Jamestown colonists, both free and indentured. Inspired later by the 2021 election victory of Jamaican-born Winsome Sears as lieutenant governor, I retitled it "Foreign-Born Woman of Color".

“I create convergent media art that celebrates the values of rural life and of the land itself, that fosters a sense of self-empowerment, self-love, self-representation, community, and the strengths of traditional cultures. My work explores the relationship between both high and low technology cultures, ethnic and class identities, shamanic tourism, and an expanding sense of the natural and supernatural worlds. As a verbal and visual storyteller, I strive to commit my rich and varied life experiences to canvas and paper, sharing the ceremonial life of indigenous communities in both normal and visionary time, and exploring concepts of strength and vulnerability through treatments of my royal, noble, and humble ancestors. What starts out as contemplation becomes, I hope, a portal for the viewer to briefly enter another reality, leaving only a sense of a picture album of the road not taken and a eulogy for the self-imposed limits of our existence.” Books "ESCAPE From the Darkroom! - Old-School Principles Applied to Modern Digital Photography" [2013] https://amazon.com/dp/1484840011/ “GeoHypnotics: A Gentle Way to Access Deeper Consciousness” [2016] Four volumes https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530632501/ ; https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530640121/; https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530644690/ ; https://www.amazon.com/dp/1530786126/ https://amazon.com/author/brianwilkes
