I don't know how I got there. But I found myself there, burning up, in some kind of primordial ooze. Reptilian, undefined, unindividuated. Scales, and talons and claws and feathers, sprouting but never becoming. I was drowning in a writhing heaving mass, I felt like I was in labor, trying to give birth to myself. At some point I was finally able to rise from this heaving, steaming, teeming ooze. Rise up as a woman, as a human, as a being. It was as if from all that teeming mass, I gathered myself into me. I spoke the words "Yo puedo", "I can". I found my strength and I began to rise, to give birth to myself. I felt like I had tapped into one of the sacred memories of all womankind. These paintings, illustrate some of the feelings I had during this profound experience in the Amazon jungle of Peru. They are painted with natural vegetable and mineral tints found in a mercado in the Sacred Valley, and were painted at an artist residency in the jungle in December of 2014. They are painted with natural tints I bought near Matchu Picchu and brought into the jungle with me. This painting in the series is called Fuego. It represents the moment I found the fire inside, the strength to rise up and give birth to myself!

Eve Chayes Lyman is an artist, documentary photographer, and activist based in both the the United States and Guatemala. Her work combines art and social justice with a passion for the beauty of our common humanity. Having come into contact with the dark and painful side of life, she feels that it is crucial to explore our own shadows and demons and to ask ourselves difficult questions. This is reflected in her work. But her life experiences have given her an enduring faith in the overarching transcendence of the human spirit which can be seen in all of her work. The inspiration for her drawings is found in the figure, with its infinite capacity to express and embody the range and complexity of what it means to be human.
