About The Artwork

Watercolor painting of a Native American man inspired by a photo of a Nez Perce warrior, Three Eagles. The photo was taken by Edward Curtis in 1910. Three Eagles was an associate to Chief Joseph. This painting is one in a series of paintings I have been painting on Native American subjects and mythology. I am interested in painting Native American subjects because I see their traditional relationship to the earth and to the spiritual is something our modern world can learn from. In their stories, legends and tales there is an interconnectedness between the human world, nature, and spirit. Animals are often called relatives. There is respect for all, and that is embedded in how traditionally Native Americans see life: as a spiritual manifestation. In our modern world, however, we are deeply ingrained in a much more materialistic view of things where most things are there for us to acquire, to have, and to be used. What I see is that having things doesn't make us happy. Connection does and experiencing life as a vital and mysterious force. I believe that as children we had a stronger sense of this. Native American subjects remind me to reconnect with a more innocent and pure way of seeing things. Painting this man I intended to bring his softer qualities. Not to depict him as man of determination but rather expressing his faith, openness, and an overall noble quality.. I used Daniel Smith Extra Fine watercolor paint including some Daniel Smith iridescent colors that subtly enhance the artwork. On Arches watercolor paper, which is made of 100% cotton.

Zsuzsanna Rossetter was born and raised in Hungary and moved to the United States in 1997. Art has accompanied her all her life and she started to draw at a very early age. Zsuzsa watched her father draw figures and carve wood sculptures, and was especially fascinated by the African face painted in black hanging on the wall of their home that he had made from a half-split log. She grew up in a house with a large garden where everything seemed magical to her: the ferns, fruit trees, and the flowers in springtime. Zsuzsa’s grandparents had a large farm where she would climb on the cherry trees with her cousins. All this created a deep affinity in her toward the natural world and the living things in it.
