About The Artwork

Green Fields in America is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts a sailing ship bringing many Irish immigrants to America. In 1845, a fungus-like organism drifted across the ocean from North America and blighted the potato fields of Ireland. This infestation ruined half of the potato crop in the first year and three-quarters of the crop in the next seven years. The Irish people relied heavily on the potato as a source of food and suffered great starvation. By 1852 nearly a million people had died of starvation while another million boarded ships heading across the stormy Atlantic hoping to find a better life upon “the green fields of America.”
