About The Artwork

I'm always inspired by human behaviour.. This painting was inspired by a song with the words "what we do in the name of love" that got stuck in my mind.. One can ponder on that thought forever - isn't it most of what we do?? I love painting portraits for how it lies, hope, question, love.. always fascinated by it.

Driekie van Wyk, a visual artist based in Cape Town, possesses a diverse practice that encompasses painting and sculpture. Renowned for her ability to encapsulate the essence of life through portraiture, Driekie's work is a testament to the depth and complexity of human experience. Inspired by the notion that each individual harbors entire galaxies within them, Driekie's art is a celebration of the interconnectedness of humanity. She believes that when we gaze into someone else's eyes, our worlds collide, fostering a deeper understanding of one another. This belief is vividly reflected in her work, where the eyes of her subjects always meet the viewer's gaze, regardless of their position in the room. In a world where genuine eye contact has become increasingly rare, replaced by the constant distraction of screens, Driekie's art serves as a poignant reminder of the power of human connection. Her pieces demand attention, inviting viewers to engage deeply and meaningfully with the emotions they evoke. Driekie's art challenges us to rediscover the intimacy of soulful connection, urging us to pause, reflect, and truly see one another amidst the noise of modern life.
