About The Artwork
This watercolour is an exploration of the idea that anyone can be a Buddha, an enlightened one. All the same it asks if the wisdom of those whose buddhahood is not apparent, even hidden behind the appearance of bad behaviour and character, is really real. The problem rhymes with that of determining whether a tree that fell in the forest without anyone to hear it falling has really fallen. The moody composition, whose subject is Donald Trump but could equally be anybody else, uses the conflict of cool and warm colours giving the impression that the red/yellow subject must cut the noise and distraction of the blue/yellow background; just as the aspiring Buddha must cut through the noise and distraction of our default state of living on autopilot.

Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can.
