About The Artwork

If home is where the heart is it is also where the hearth is. It is hard to feel at home in accommodations where one cannot fix oneself a hot meal or a warm drink. The kitchen is a site of personal sustenance and also immersion in family life; the family meal is the second most intimate human experience. This watercolor is based on a photograph of my own kitchen which seemed to me to capture the romance and the drama of the home as a place where one truly "lives". The sharp division between the upper and lower half, going from bottom-left to down-right, gives a dynamic force to this still life composition. The natural placement of household objects in use, defying the artificiality inherent in posing, give the composition a compelling spontaneity.

As an artist I'm interested in classical style as well as modern technique. Specifically, I'm interested in using the visual idioms of classical style, with their emphasis on accuracy, perspective, and proportionality, in the service of creating representational art that conveys more than a photograph can. While I work with pastels, pencils, and acrylics too, I am partial to watercolours. Though watercolours are considered by some to be a poorer cousin of oil paint I believe this is an unfair and inaccurate view, encouraged on one hand by the demandingess and temperamental nature of the medium and on the other hand the enviable freshness and spontaneity it can bring to a composition in the hands of a master, In addition to my pursuit of visual art projects, I write nonfiction essays, and reviews for arts and culture website www.Middlebrowse.com
