Kill Nazi Scum Print

The resurgence of American nationalist groups leading up to the 2016 presidential election inspired this painting. I hope its viewers will feel disturbed and critically analyze their feelings, and which aspect of this painting disturbs them. I want viewers to think on World War II, recall what it was for, what it resulted in, and how a myth of postwar American superiority resulted in neo-Nazis and other white nationalists gaining positions of political power in the United States. I chose the medium, subject matter, and style because I reject the traditionally hypermasculine sensibility of the mid-century AbEx artists, their fascination with approaching painting as a battle and a challenge, rather than a meditation or an outlet that allows us to bear witness to our own interiority.
