About The Artwork

The work is an interpretation of Shakespeare's King Lear. My lear is not a Caucasian old man with a leonine mane, but a more relatable old man, with very Indian features. The model, a close friend, is a professor of English, who was delighted to pose for Lear, who is usually depicted with flowing hair. The great king knows not who he is - and this frame shows my model cleaning is dentures with a toothpick, with childlike eyes imploring at the viewer, don't despise me! I am more like you that you may know.

Shweta Rao Garg is an artist, writer and poet based in India. She is a professor of literature at a university. Her first solo exhibition of painting, called “Bard in Acrylic” organised in Ahmedabad in December 2018. This series was inspired by the works of Shakespeare. The paintings of her Bard series are not mere illustrations of Shakespeare’s universe but are interpretations that are fully self-aware and celebratory of the time and space between the artist and the great Bard. Her art, like her writing, seeks to recreate the paradigm and give a new perspective to the viewers. Her artwork is replete with jouissance as well as irony. She believes that through her art, she can contribute to people having a nuanced appreciation of life and its inexplicable quandaries.
