About The Artwork

This oil painting conveys the atmosphere of the charming harbor of 'La Pointe Courte' in Sète, one of my favorite themes. It hasn't changed much in centuries with its wooden huts to store the fishing gear, its flat bottomed boats used to transport oysters and the herons who regurlarly visit the place. A close attention has been paid to the contrasts between light and shade and to the reflections of sky, huts and boats in the water. This work was painted on a linen canvas in successive glazes, from watercolors made in-situ. This technique (thin semi transparent layers of paint gradually added on top of each other) gives depth and a lot of luminosity. It took about 10 months to complete because of the necessary drying times between each layer (5 to 10 layers depending on the opacity of the pigments). This work is ready to hang. Because of its size, it doesn't really need a frame. The sides are painted black for presentation.
