About The Artwork

This piece was a totally new experience for me, an exploration in a new approach to intuitive painting. I started by laying the base colours. I chose colours that I feel go well together - red, turquoise and yellow over a black backdrop. Then I added lines of different colours, very roughly to blur the background. Last, I went over those lines with more precise lines, using plastic cards. Part of the fun was finding different colours that compliment each other and stand out on their own, without becoming too overpowering. The whole piece is a balance act. The experience was very meditative as I had to focus as I painted each line and repeated the motion many times. The lines are added in such a way that the background can also be the foreground, and the foreground can blends into the back, as it fills up the negative space between the lines. The piece is a delight to take in from a distance and immerse yourself into up close.

I am a globe-trotting artist who draws inspiration from many places: Born in Los Angeles from French parents and raised in Canada, I spent many years living in Japan. I currently live in the beautiful bilingual city of Ottawa. Because I was born with no depth perception, I see shapes and colours vividly and in my own way. This is what has drawn me to abstract art - where I can express my feelings and create an ambience with the placement and mixing of colours. My work has been describe as bold, feminist and unapologetic. I paint from my feelings and use bright colours to represent my intense moods. I work mainly with acrylic, and sometimes oil pastels. My favorite instrument to use are plastic cards (like credit cards, memberships cards, etc.), but I also enjoy working with paint brushes, sponges, rags, fingers, and more.
