About The Artwork

I am a self taught artist from Bangalore, India. In the year 2000 I was commissioned to paint a large version of a traditional Indian painting from the Hindu scripture called Mahabharata which is dated to the 2nd century BC. This picture epitomises the theme of this particular episode where a battle is about to begin and the Hindu God Krishna explains the virtues of Dharma (duties) and why the warrior in the picture is forced to fight his own brothers. The picture conveys so much of those factors to those who know the story. To me the original painting (obviously done by Masters) was so alluring that I was raring to go. Back then painting was a hobby for me rather than my main occupation. It took me little over a year to complete the project working during nights. It was an eye opener for my love for painting/Art. While on the job I realised I knew almost nothing about oil painting. Through trial and error I taught myself everything that was needed to reach close to the original. The completed painting elicited much appreciation locally. But at heart I knew I could have done it much much better. If I had had the time and resources. Down the years having completed many other made-to-order paintings I was still looking at my first version of the Mahabharatha and feel the gaping lack of depth. I felt the compelling need to paint it one more time. And so in 2018 I began a new version. This was the first time in my life I was painting without a confirmed order/commisioned agreement. It allowed me the comfort of not working against time. The challenge was to prove to myself that I can reach the standards of the masters who combined to paint the original version of "Bhagawad Gita", which is part of the epic scripture Mahabharatha"". I knew the kind of time it required me to put in to get even close was nothing less than 1000+ hours. I also knew that economically and financially it was NOT the best thing to do. I was constrained knowing I could only put in 6-10 hours a week on average. But it was now or never for me. As what mattered most was to know whether I had the ability, patience and determination. And so the long journey began and in February 2021 (almost 1500 hours later) I felt it was good enough to be called completed. That is how it has reached here and I feel the long hours I put in were more than worthy. It taught me one special lesson..... Learning never stops. Every piece of art teaches something new..... There is nothing called - I have learnt everything......

I was born in Bangalore, India. Most of my childhood and teenage life was spent with scant regard for art or my ability to draw well. Life then did not have any trace of ART absolutely. My early 20s life was more oriented towards earning a good monthly salary and Art had no place in the scheme of things. All my energies were pooled into multiple sales/marketing jobs that took care of the monthly needs. When I was around 30 years of age destiny brought me an opportunity to milk my inherent talent and the true joy of Art that I seemed to have forgotten all about. An opportunity to paint a portrait for a client who just knew I could draw well. I had absolutely no idea of any form of painting. Not even water/poster color painting. But I took up the offer as I had always been able to do near perfect pencil shading portraits whenever I had tried it before. Yes I HAD confidence. And so I learnt everything I needed to know while on the job - painting the portrait - through trial and error. The first painting fetched me a little over two months salary I used to earn then. I have been painting since then as I kept getting painting orders steadily from people who had viewed one of earlier works. But painting was still my secondary occupation until 2015. When I was finally able to paint full time. It is because of this freedom from a salaried job I have started finding time to paint my own creations. Yes I started very late...... But never too late to start....
