About The Artwork

Inspired by Minangkabau women of Indonesia The Minangkabau are the largest surviving matrilineal and matrilocal community and identify themselves as matriarchal. Nearly 4 million Minangkabau people live in West Sumatra and another 4 million are scattered throughout Indonesia and Malaysia. There is significant focus on human relationships, similar to nurturing plants, animals and ecosystems, to build a stronger society. According to Peggy Reeves Sanday, an anthropologist who lived with the Minangkabau for several years, this casts a maternal shadow over daily life. Wealth, family name and land pass from mother to daughter and women are highly respected and revered. Similar to the Mosuo, male partners live separately from women as men and women in this society don’t live together. Also, amongst the Minangkabau, neither male nor female rule is possible. Similar to several other matriarchal societies, this is because of the strong belief that decision making is by consensus. Similar to the Tuareg and the Ngazidja people, the Minangkabau people follow Islam while retaining the rights and importance of women in their society. However, their belief systems are eroding in the face of the surrounding patriarchy, and politics and religion are slowly becoming male domains.

I am a London based artist working primarily with acrylics. I enjoy the versatility of the medium as I have the flexibility of choosing between a water colour approach, oil like approach or trying new ways. My paintings mostly start off as ideas and concepts, which I compose in my head. Once I’m happy with the subjects, the colours and the placement, I then translate this to my chosen medium. I use a lot of colour symbolism in my paintings and even match backgrounds with the subjects I paint.
