About The Artwork

This is an original abstract pairing done in watercolor, ink, and acrylic on heavy watercolor paper. I painted the initial layer quickly in watercolor on paper that was already a little damp. On top of the watercolor I applied acrylic based inks, which penetrate into the watercolor slightly, but mostly produce areas of bright, vibrant and saturated color. I like to draw wispy lines with the ink dropper, pressing into the paper and making slight indentations which result in ghostly trails. I create a composition based on the interplay between lines, amorphous fields of color, and the negative space of the underlying watercolor. On top of all of this I used squeeze tubes to apply specially formulated acrylic paint—white, black, yellow, and crimson in this painting—into areas of wet ink. The ink has a wonderful way of pushing into the acrylic, and that's how I get those very nice gradients to form, which close examination reveals are composed of dendritic patterns where the ink pushes in like rivers gathering from mountain streams in reverse. This painting is painted on a 16 x 12 inch sheet of heavy archival paper. If you have the painting matted you'll need to crop a quarter inch or so on each side. This image shows a cropped version of the painting, as it would appear when matted.
