In recent projects, I have explored the concept of 'peeping,' symbolizing moments of a person's emotional deprivation and unsatiated desire from always wanting 'something else.' The overarching theme of my current work is 'glance.' We glance -largely unintentionally- when we feel inadequate or compare ourselves with others. It reflects our desire to satisfy our emotional and primordial needs. Facing our own desires is equivalent to facing our emotional insecurities, hence often unpleasant and even overwhelming. However, life is full of deficiencies. We ought to face our own insecurities because they ultimately will lead to unhappiness if not reflected upon and resolved. This series of paintings playfully explores desire as human nature rather than a taboo. I want to openly discuss deficiencies we experience in daily lives. In my works, I use primary hues and opposite colors to accentuate the figures (as traditionally used in Oriental paintings). Centered in most paintings, the subjects are expressed with minimal and simple figures in order to draw attention to glancing facial expressions. Vibrant colors and simple figures will allow audience to resonate with the paintings more easily while reflecting on their own deficiencies and needs.
