VIEW IN MY ROOM
A quaint fishing village in Halifax, Nova Scotia had all the right picture-perfect qualities—plus daisies. During a quick mid-October visit to Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, the sun was out for only a few moments. Even off-season, the picturesque cove was overrun with fellow travelers, so I ventured away from the crowds and explored the rocky shoreline and other areas. Pretty clouds turned out to be storm clouds and when the wind began to blow, serious snowfall rolled in and quickly covered the walks. We were prepared with winter gear, and I had my fingerless gloves to work my camera with—too bad for those visitors who shivered in sandals and light coats. Still, the first snow of the season is always a reason to rejoice. I came across a hillside of daisies basking in the sun. The top of the field was home to a series of unoccupied houses, an idle truck, a few overturned wheelbarrows. It felt very typical of a simple East Coast style that someone chose to paint in sweet shades of reds and yellows. For a few minutes it was summer again—and then the snow blew into my face and it was time to leave.

Joy Makon is a passionate observer of color and light; she explores the relationships of watercolor paint, heavy paper and contemporary reality. Her paintings are based on observations of daily life through landscapes and seascapes, often with figures incorporated into the composition. Subjects come from neighborhoods in NYC, and from travels domestically and abroad. Makon employs classic drawing and watercolor techniques in her paintings; for example, she uses the white of the paper rather than white paint, to convey the strong sense of light that is so evident in her work. It is her unique approach to subject, composition, point-of-view that makes her work anything but traditional. Joy Makon has a BFA in graphic design and photography from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, where she studied with John Moore, Stanislaw Zagorski and Joseph Scorsone. Her work has been shown in juried and gallery shows and can be found in private collections throughout the U.S. Makon has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers, Society of Illustrators, for her work as a magazine art director. Joy is a member of artist-run 440 Gallery in Brooklyn. http://440gallery.com She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
