Head study of Bariks, the black German Spitz. He is depicted in the three-quarter profile standing in a mountainous landscape rendered in cool hues. His playful temperament is revealed in the eyes, the upright ears and the slight tilt of a head. The soft dark silhouette of a double coat stands out against the brighter background with a cloudy sky and plants nearby. For this painting I chose a cardboard (0,12 in) coated with a gesso ground to achieve finer details in my work. The paint layer was applied thinly with fine brushstrokes in areas of detail and background, using a wet in wet technique. A natural resin varnish was used to protect the finished painting. The painting is framed in a hand-crafted pine wood frame and ready to hang. Framing costs are included in the price, as it was specifically made for this painting. If you wish to purchase the painting with the frame removed and the cost deducted from the price, do not hesitate to contact me about it. Working from my studio at home I create realistic dog portraits using photos as reference. With my understanding of dogs and their distinguishing features, I can allow their personality, and not only their race specifics, to show. My work is done in oils on linen, cardboard or panels offering traditional style paintings, and I take my inspiration and passion from the Old Dutch Masters, although my particular influences are the European animal painters George Stubbs and Carl Reichert. I began painting animals while practicing old master techniques during my studies in art conservation. Thus, I base my portraits on a study in detail of the subject and I build up the surface with many thinly applied layers of oil paint to develop depth, shape, colour and light. When painting dogs there is a great joy in paying attention to minute details such as the texture of the coat, the shape of the nose, whiskers, ears and eye-colour, all to create a true picture of an individual. My aim is to discover and create portraits of every single dog breed.
