Portrait of the famous Afro-American bookstore owner and prisoner advocate See Wikipedia entry for Martin Sostre: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Sostre. Sostre was my mentor when I was against the war in Vietnam. He was arrested in Buffalo during the uprising in the black community in 1967. Sentenced to 43 years in a penitentiary (Greenhaven, NY) he became a cause of Amnesty International. The police and firemen had turned their fire hoses on his bookstore and then framed Martin on trumped up heroin charges. I was the Chairperson of his Defense Committee. Eventually Sostre was given a pardon by Governor Carey of New York. Joe Shapiro, a writer for NPR's Code Switch podcasts, recently posted a piece about Martin Sostre. Several movies and books have been written about him. This is the painting I made for his Wikipedia page. I hope it finds a good home someday. Sostre died in 2015.
