This image began as a playful idea to hang a painting at an angle; the shadowy, backlit figure pressed against the other side of the canvas appears to have shifted the painting. After reading about political scientist Joseph Overton I wanted to incorporate his 'window' theory and developed the piece further by setting it in a gilded frame, emphasising the impression the canvas has moved by tarnishing all the gold leaf apart from the glistening wedges revealed by the tilted canvas. Overton's theory is that for any political issue there's a range of socially acceptable, uncontroversial opinions that's far smaller than the range of more shocking, possible opinions, the smaller group forming the 'window'. The placement of this window can be shifted over time using pressure groups, such as think tanks and media manipulation, to introduce more shocking opinions that widen public debate and allow opinions on the fringe of the window to be tolerated and even accepted - this is how public opinion is manipulated today, something that I feel deserves more scrutiny. The protagonist in this image is not only female, she is also pushing her window on the world to the left, contrary to the current trend.

Following on from her role as Roaming Sketch Artist for Wilderness Festival between 2014 and 2018, Hamley became the first official Artist in Residence for Jazz Live at the Crypt, an established jazz venue in South London and was recently selected as the Reserve Artist for the 2022 Sky Portrait Artist of the Year. Hamley's work has been selected for the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, the Lynn Painter-Stainer's Competition, the Dulwich Picture Gallery Open Exhibition and she is a Folio Society commissioned Illustrator. When working plein air Hamley uses medium that are easily transportable such as watercolour. The larger format paintings are executed in the studio with acrylics as they allow her to work quickly, add texture and create depth of colour with glazes and dry-brush techniques. Dali and Magritte made an impression on Hamley at an early age, also Rembrandt and Renoir, later Goya, Van Gogh, Gaugin, Turner, Duchamp, Magritte, Escher, Stanley Spencer, Hockney, Bacon and Frink, currently Bonnar, Seurat and Manet.
